Schengen

Borders – land, air, sea borders

The implementation of common rules for border checks at the external EU borders and the abolishment of border checks at the internal borders, compensated with measures on the territory of the country, guarantee the security of Member States and facilitate free movement within the Schengen area.
 An Integrated Border Management Strategy and an Action plan attached to it are being successfully implemented in order to increase the effectiveness of the border management in Bulgaria.

Three evaluation missions were conducted:
- “Sea borders” – September 2009;
- “Air borders” – November 2009.
- “Land border” – March 2010.

The evaluation reports reflect the progress achieved, including some examples of best practices applied by the Bulgarian border officials were found.
